Global Oil Crisis Reshapes Our Lives

2026 06/08

The global oil crisis, triggered by the Middle East conflict and disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz, is no longer confined to the energy sector. It has evolved into an "everything crisis" that ripples through every corner of the global economy, affecting nations across all continents.

For Africa, the crisis poses severe risks. The Middle East is closely linked to Africa’s trade and energy supply. Sustained tensions could quickly turn into a continent-wide cost-of-living crisis, driving up fuel and food prices, raising shipping and insurance costs, and straining exchange rates and public finances.

In Asia, the manufacturing hub of the world, the impact is immediate. Petrochemical shortages disrupt production of daily necessities, from plastic bags to medical supplies. In Europe, high energy costs hammer industrial output, while in the Americas, even energy-rich nations face soaring fuel prices, as oil is a globally traded commodity.

For China, a major oil importer, the crisis hits directly. Soaring international oil prices push up domestic refined oil costs, triggering a sharp rise in domestic airline fuel surcharges starting April 5. The rising global oil prices have brought imported inflation, pushing up domestic production and living costs.

The crisis has no quick fix. Naphtha, a key petroleum byproduct with no substitute, is in short supply globally, leaving nations with limited recourse. It will continue to weigh on global growth, push up inflation, and reshape the energy security strategies of many countries.
